COLORADO SCHOOLS GET HELP TO PROVIDE MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES

By: Nicole Brady, Denver7 May 14, 2018 DENVER — May is Mental Health Awareness month, and Mental Health Colorado is pushing for schools to be primary resources for kids facing a mental health issue. "The first signs of mental illness typically appear during adolescence, but most people don't get the care they need until eight or 10 years later, if they ever get it at all," says Andrew Romanoff, Mental Health Colorado's president and CEO. Mental Health Colorado says addressing mental health in schools leads to improved school climate, academic outcomes and student wellness. The group has published an online toolkit w...

MENTAL HEALTH IN KIDS: GOING BEYOND DISEASE-DRIVEN APPROACHES

By: Cecilia Brown MARQUETTE — Two children are diagnosed with serious medical conditions — one child is diagnosed and has a plan for health-based school services put into place almost immediately, while it takes nearly two years for the other child to receive the health services and supports in school that they need. The two children were similar in many ways, but had one key difference — the latter child had been diagnosed with a mental illness. “A mental health issue and a physical health issue, why do they look so different when it comes to getting supports that are needed?” asked Dr. Sarah Davidon, research director ...

By: Shaun Boyn, CBS4 Denver May 8, 2018 DENVER (CBS4) – The state legislature will wrap up the 2018 session Wednesday. Among the issues getting a lot of attention this year was mental illness. Colorado has one of the highest suicide rates in the country. Lawmakers introduced nearly 40 bills covering a wide range of mental health issues including substance abuse. One of the lawmakers carrying the bills understands the issue first hand. Rep. Dafna Michaelson Jenet, a Democrat from Commerce City, says her son attempted suicide when he was just 9 years old. “The help wasn’t there. I didn’t have someone to go to to tell me where ...

By; Mary Shinn, Durango Herald May 8, 2018 One measure to fund suicide prevention in schools failed in the Colorado Senate this week, but a similar measure could win approval before the state’s legislative session ends today. State Rep. Barbara McLachlan, D-Durango, backed the measures aimed at creating grant programs for schools to introduce suicide prevention programs. SB18-272 is pending in the House. McLachlan sponsored the Senate bill, along with three other lawmakers. It calls for setting aside $400,000 in grant funding for public schools to implement crisis and suicide-prevention training for staff. A similar ...

GOING, GOING…

May 10, 2018 One hundred and twenty days after they began, state lawmakers wrapped up their annual session last night. What do we have to show for it? When it comes to mental health care, quite a bit. We championed more than a dozen bills, almost all of which are now on their way to the governor’s desk. Among our top priorities: helping Coloradans navigate the insurance system (HB 1357); secure treatment and housing in the wake of a mental health crisis (SB 270); receive residential or inpatient care for substance use disorders (HB 1136); and obtain mental health services for their children without giving up custody (HB 1094). We’re ...
